06. THE OTHERS
I believe that this song is actually related to the next song in the album, since it they both focus more on the strange fairy tale world that our main characters live on.
In this particular song, the story focuses on what happens to the other people that end up falling in this weird world. Hence, the title «THE OTHERS».
The story begins with a man entering his bathroom, the door closes behind him as his toothbrush passes through his mirror. In confusion he approaches the mirror and sees a female figure that seems familiar to him, yet he can't remember who she is. There's this quick moment where it goes to a woman's point of view and how she's writing in her own blood because she got cut by the broken fragments of the mirror. The mirror then reveals a labyrinth to the man.
The song then switches to the woman's point of view, she had entered her bathroom the same way the man did and immediately started to wonder why it smelled of tobacco and cologne. The toothbrush that had been passed through the man's mirror had now fallen in her bathroom, a toothbrush that she doesn't recognize. Then, just like in man's point of view, there was this quick moment where he draws a heart in the broken fragments. Then, the mirror reveals a labyrinth to the woman.
After they both go through the mirror, they get lost in the labyrinth. They both seem to be chased by something which causes fear to run in their veins as they try to escape whatever is trying to kill them. In the end, the man gets caught and killed, not being able to run any longer due to one of his feet having gotten ripped off by the creature. The woman, let's out cries for help, yet no one comes to her aid as she ends up getting killed by another creature (this being reinforced by the female scream heard at the end of the song).
In case you haven't gotten hold of what is happening yet, I shall explain it to you.
In this song, the labyrinth is actually the forest of this strange world (the forest where our main protagonists live on). The red and black forest that were introduced at the very beginning of this album (in its first song). It makes quite a lot of sense considering that forests are in a way a natural labyrinth on its own, capable of getting people lost if you wander in it for too long.
Taking that into account, this song is about a couple who managed to create a connected nightmare between each other. Yet, strangely enough once they were inside the nightmare, they had lost the memory of each other but since they were part of each other's life in the real world, their bathrooms were identical, having things belonging to both the man and the woman. The mirror, is an invitation to the labyrinth, if you choose to pass through it you'll get stuck in the forest trying to survive whatever horrors that await you in it. They both "accepted" the invitation by passing through the mirror, though, they both ended up in different/separate places of the forest. Once in the forest, they ended up being chased and then killed off by one of its many residents/creatures (they could have been killed by the Wolf, Carmilla or some other resident that we don't know of since the song never states how the creature looks nor acts like).
In the song there's also this seemingly off parts about "someone inventively watching them", "an old music box crying" and a "deserted old room". And its those parts that brings us to our next song.
07. パンズ・ラビリンス (Pan’s labyrinth)This song was probably one of the most interesting and most difficult songs in this album. Since, my trustworthy english translator didn't make any more translations after the 6th song in this album, I had to search for someone else's translation. I, unfortunately, don't trust spanish translations when it comes to this album due to the massive wave of misinformation the most popular one of those spanish translators spread towards the community. Though, luckily enough, I found a spanish translator that actually accurately translated this song, to which I thank you from the depths of my heart, GhoulTamer. With that out of the way, let's continue.
I'm particularly excited to share the story of this song, because I believe that this song is somewhat special. It introduces to what I believe to be yet another main character to this series (even though they only make an appearance in this song). That main character, being none other than Pan himself.
Before I dive in on what story this song is trying to tell us, I will explain to you who Pan is in order for it to make sense.
«A long, long time ago, there was a black and red forest that was abandoned by man.» That man that the intro refers to, is Pan.
Pan is, what I believe to be, the God of Red Cap's world. This can be backed with the fact that he shares the same name of a well known god from greek mythology, Pan the god of nature. Though for as interesting as that would be, I don't think the Pan from Red Cap's world is the same Pan from greek mythology, I only think he shares the same similar characteristic elements from the greek god (kinda the same way Red Cap shares a few characteristic elements from the original Red Ridding Hood, yet not being Red Ridding Hood herself).
He created the world where Red Cap resides (which I believe that is nothing more than the forest) and is the one who has summoned the various strange yet deadly creatures onto his own world that he monitors from a distance. He is also responsible for inviting people from other worlds onto his own world, via a nightmare, as seen in the previous song «THE OTHERS».
This song takes a more direct approach to his character and let's us know just a little bit more about him.
The story starts with Red Cap hearing a strange song coming from outside her window at night. She, can't help but follow the melody as she runs through the obscure forest. While she runs through the dark forest, she can't help but to notice the glow from the neighboring fairies and the few mushrooms that seem to follow after her. Eventually, she reaches a strange house/room and, once inside, she sees seemingly antique dolls walking around freely. Red Cap is filled with fear towards this strange house as she tries her best to keep herself calm. Though, in the seemingly old abandoned house, she hears a noise, once she looks in the direction of where the sound came from she sees a guy (Pan), who invites her to come closer to him. She hesitantly did so, then, he said in a language that she couldn't understand «You don't want to go back, right?» he then hugs her gently as he continues speaking in the unknown language «This love won't ever fade away.», even though Red Cap couldn't understand what he was saying, for some reason she couldn't help but have a bad feeling towards all of this.
After an unknown period of time has passed, Red Cap notices the mirror in Pan's house. Realizing that in the other side of the mirror was her own world, she saw it as a way out of the house. She ran as fast as she could down the hallway towards the mirror, not even paying attention to the big red box as she ran. Continuing to run through the darkness, she misses seeing the sun's light, and with gentle and tearful eyes, the dolls tell her «Quick, don't let him trap you». Much to Red Cap's unfortunate fate, Pan caught her just before she could reach the mirror. Killing her and turning her into one of his dolls so she could never escape him for all eternity.
I believe that in this ending, Pan fell in love with Red Cap, then attracted her with his song to his house. In the song its stated that he has a small heart (probably hinting to lack of empathy) and that he's very devoted into this one sided love (since Red Cap didn't share his feelings back, yet he blindly believes that she loves him). Red Cap was most likely trapped in that house for months (for her to wish the light of day) and once she saw the mirror that reflected her own world (the mirror being how Pan probably monitors over his own world) she ran as fast as she could towards it, as the dolls (probably previous love interests of Pan who became his victims, so I assume all of the dolls in the house are woman) tell her to quicken her pace before she ends up trapped like they did. Unfortunately, Pan caught her, then turned her into one of his dolls.
But you must be wondering, "What about the big red box? What makes it so important?"
Well you see, this big red box isn't a simple box. Its a music box. The reason why it's so important is that this music box is actually in the album's title. Gothika ~赤羊音戯箱~ translates to Gothika ~Red Sheep's Music Box~ which is Pan's music box (since the greek god is said to share traits with sheep/goats in its physical appearance, I believe that Pan is the human personification of a sheep/goat just like Red Cap is the human personification of a hare). The role of the music box to make it this important? Well, that I'm not exactly sure of. It can be important because it might be what Pan uses to lure his victims (the strange song that Red Cap heard from the forest) or it could be because its the music box itself telling us the story of what's happening to our main protagonists (since this album is made out of songs that are telling us stories, I think that's a most likely reason as to why its important. Since the music box resides in Pan's house, it probably "saw" the horrors that Pan has made in order to get entertained, so the music box is telling us, in a form of a song, what it saw. Though that's only a theory of mine).
Either ways, I think its quite neat to have Pan hinted at us from the title of the album itself. Its quite a shame that only very few people know of his existence.
08. DARK LUNACYThis song was actually yet another of the hardest songs in this album. Mostly because there's only one available translation on Youtube and it was spanish. After re-listening to the song over and over again, I felt like something was off, so I went deeper to search for any kind of lyrics to this song and I managed to find lyrics in japanese. Even though I'm nowhere near at being an expert in japanese, the song has some english words mixed in it. Which was enough for me to realize that the spanish translation was wrong. So I tried my best to translate it and bring to you the actual meaning of the song.
Unlike the other songs from this album, this one doesn't tell a story in specific. I believe that this song vaguely talks about the reason as to why so many unfortunate events happen throughout the songs in the album.
An interesting thing about this song is that it talks about someone falling insane because of love, though it never specifies on who falls in into this dark lunacy. I believe that was intentional, since it could be literally anyone falling in this dark lunacy. It could be either the Wolf, Black Cap or even Pan himself.
I also believe that this "Dark Lunacy" that the song talks about is actually a curse cast upon Red Cap's world, a curse that
almost no one is able to escape, and whoever falls victim of this curse is doomed to go insane because of their love for someone.
As for the reason as to why this curse exists, I will actually need to explain the 9th and 10th song first since they are huge pieces in this whole puzzle. So, with that in mind, I will add in the parts that I didn't explain in this song in the other songs in order for it to make sense.
But basically, this song talks about those who fall insane upon falling in love.
09. Child’s Play
Finally we reach the most popular and most theorized song in the album. And with it, I shall bring the story that mostly everyone, including myself, believes to be the actual events of what happened in this song.
There once lived two twins, Red Cap and Black Cap. They both fell in love with the neighboring Wolf. Though, Black Cap noticed how the Wolf paid more attention to Red Cap than herself, growing more and more jealous each day that passed. «Why doesn't Mr Wolf notice me?» she would wonder through her jealousy.Until one day, she got an idea. She proposed to play a game in the forest with her sister. Red Cap smiled in response as Black Cap visibly frowned. Red Cap couldn't help but feel that something was wrong as she followed her sister through the forest, and, once they came to a stop in the middle of the forest, Red Cap looked at her sister with concern and slight hesitance. Black Cap harshly pushed Red Cap to the ground, looking down at her as she slowly pulled out a knife. Red Cap stood there, eyeing her sister in pure confusion as Black Cap approached her.Black Cap then took out her sister's eyes, then her hair and then her lips so she could never look beautiful ever again. She then cut off her feet so Red Cap wouldn't be able to run back to Mr Wolf. While Black Cap was doing this, Red Cap kept remembering all the times where they used to laugh together and was puzzled as to why her own sister was doing this. Eventually, once the deed was done, Red Cap's screams had long been gone and she was left completely unrecognizable, having died of blood loss.As Black Cap eyed her dead sister, the thought of Mr Wolf finding the corpse of Red Cap ran through her mind, and, along with it, came another idea. She then took out her own eyes, hair and lips, then replaced them with Red Cap's. That way, the Wolf would never realize Red Cap had been killed. From time to time, Black Cap would regret what she had done, but it didn't matter now since she could be with Mr Wolf, forever. This is the most believed theory in the japanese community and I honestly believe its way more well thought than most english/spanish theories that I've seen out there.
People say that the broken english in this song is because Red Cap is dying and having trouble speaking. The laughs, obviously belonging to Black Cap.
Though this song could also refer to the various bad endings that seem to always await Red Cap and the various times she has died. Having the phrase of «Who is killing me?» being her questioning who is killing her this time.
10. 終りの童話 (Ending of a tale for children)
This was, without a doubt, the hardest "song" in the whole album. I only managed to find two translations to this song, one from the trustworthy blog but its full of english mistakes and the creator of the article says that one of the parts (the most important part) might be wrongly translated because not even they could understand what it meant (and adding that with the broken english only made my job harder), the other translation is spanish, and, once again, its wrongly translated and has things that weren't said added in it. After searching and researching as much as I could. After looking for anyone who could possibly tell me what the lyrics are in either english, spanish or even japanese. I eventually had to give up and stay with the translation from the blog.
With that into mind, this translation will have a lot of mistakes (way more than I'd like), so if anyone manages to find the lyrics or even translate the song correctly I would be really thankful.
«Oh, I wonder when it has become this late?
Hm...The time of my tale is over. Now, time to go to bed!...Hm? What's Wrong?Ah! Why were the black and red forest called like that/mentioned? Its interesting, isn't it?Hum, that's a secret of the forest. If I tell you what I know, you will tell everyone else about it.But even so, I will tell you...That's because the Wolf fell in love with Red Cap in the red forest, though in the black forest, his motives would either stay the same or change completely. (*)Now, I wonder, what color will the forest be dyed in?I hope we will encounter again. Good night!Dream of the forest.»*That translation is mostly wrong when it comes to exact words. Though after finding the meaning and the "secret of the forest" I tried to write whatever I could understand into the enigma in a way that makes kinda sense and that sounds like an enigma.
In this final "song", I personally believe that the Wolf is actually giving us the last clue to find out why the black and red forest are important and why certain things happened in the songs the way they did. Basically, this is the last piece of the puzzle in the Gothika series.
I shall now proceed to explain to you the secret of the forest, along with the things that I didn't reference back in the song «DARK LUNACY».
The secret of the forest is, that in reality, there isn't a black and a red forest like many people had thought. There never were two forests to begin with. The black and red forest are the same forest. A singular forest.
For as hard as it is to believe that since the first song (the intro) and the last song (the ending) clearly reference this two forests. The rest of the album never states a difference in between forests. Actually, it only refers to the forest as a singular forest rather than two different forests. There might be songs where it refers to the "obscure forest" but I have an explanation to that as well.
You see, its possible that this red and black forest are in reality the same forest.
"How?" you might be asking, well, that's really simple. The forest changes colors. Though, its not in the magical way that you are thinking.
I believe that the red forest is the color of the forest during the day and that the black forest, is simply the forest during night time. The forest doesn't change colors on its own, its still red, but during night time it gives the illusion that its color is black, just like every other forest.
Now, that seems quite dull on its own to even be considered a secret of the forest, doesn't it? Luckily, there's more to this secret than it seems.
A lot of people theorized that the red and black forest were representations of Red Cap and Black Cap that took a human/hare form. That doesn't make a lot of sense now, considering that there's only one forest and they are two different people. You could argue that Red Cap and Black Cap are the same person, but, once again, that wouldn't make sense considering the last events in the previous songs.
Though, the line of thought that people were taking isn't wrong. I honestly believe that the forest is a representation of Red Cap that takes a human/hare form. But what about Black Cap? Well, her representation is the other big element that's almost always been present throughout the songs, the moon.
I know it sounds kinda stretched, but it does make sense since the moon appears during the night and, along with it, dyes the forest black. Not only that, but there's something else to it.
I believe, that the secret is the very reason why most of this horrible and unfortunate deaths happen in this world (at least, the deaths that have no explanation).
You could say that the reason why all of this events and unfortunate deaths happen because of Pan, the god of the world himself, and, while I do believe he is responsible for causing the deaths of the innocent people that he brings into his world, I don't believe he is the main reason why our main characters seem to never meet a happy ending. In a sense, it doesn't make sense that he's killing the very creatures that he created. And yes, he did kill Red Cap in «Pan's Labyrinth», but I do have an explanation as to why he did that.
You see, I believe that the reason for all of this unfortunate bad endings to our main characters is the Dark Lunacy itself.
I also do believe that this Dark Lunacy that can struck anyone, is caused by falling in love, like it was said previously in the song «DARK LUNACY», then whoever has fallen in love becomes insane.
For as weird as it sounds, this has been constantly happening throughout the whole album. Right in the second song (Wolf and Kin), Red Cap is killed by the Wolf, who had supposedly fallen in love with her but then ate her alive as soon as night time came. In the third song (Glass Step), Black Cap fell in love with the Wolf, but the Wolf had fallen in love with Red Cap, so out of jealousy she poisoned him and killed him. In the fifth song (The Moon to the Ends of Earth), the Wolf has been clearly cursed and had this uncontrollable desire of being evil, which causes him to hurt his own beloved one (Red Cap) and in the end, Red Cap frees him by sacrificing her own life. In the seventh song (Pan's Labyrinth), Pan falls in love with Red Cap and lures her into his house, in the end, when she tries to escape, he kills her and turns her into one of his dolls so she can never escape. Finally, in the 9th song (Child's Play), Black Cap gets jealous of the love between Red Cap and the Wolf, which causes her to kill Red Cap and disguise herself as her in order for the Wolf to never find out Red Cap had been killed.
The 4th and the 6th song are the only songs where the deaths aren't caused by lovesick insanity/dark lunacy, but even so, they do have themes related to love. Having Carmilla (the fourth song) being a lesbian vampire that only takes interest in woman and girls, getting interested in Red Cap and killing her by sucking out her blood. Then having in the sixth song (THE OTHERS) starring a couple who makes a connected nightmare but are eventually killed by the creatures of the forest that Pan created.
The theme of "love" seems to be constantly present throughout the album, making me believe that its the very reason as to why this dark lunacy exists.
But even so, it feels like something might be missing in this secret. Something important.
This dark lunacy doesn't seem to be caused by the very feeling of love on its own, after all, there are small and subtle cases where love doesn't make someone go insane. Such as when the couple in «THE OTHERS» doesn't go insane with dark lunacy when they enter Pan's world or when in «The Moon to the Ends of Earth» the Wolf still loves Red Cap even after she's gone but is no longer insane. Of course, those two songs can be arguable, either because the couple doesn't remember each other or because Red Cap did sacrifice herself in order for the Wolf to be free.
But even so, I believe that this dark lunacy is somewhat of a curse. A curse caused by something other than just love on its own.
I believe that this curse is caused by the moon itself. This theory is further backed up in the fifth song (The Moon to the Ends of Earth), where Red Cap makes a contract with the moon itself to break the curse of the Wolf. Now, I believe that if the moon is strong enough to break a curse, why wouldn't it be strong enough to be the cause of that very own curse? Not only that, but this curse always seems to occur during night time (either because the song either references the moon or the obscure forest) making it most likely that the curse is indeed caused by the moon (not only that but the fact that the word Lunacy does come from
Lunaticus which means "of the moon" or "moonstruck")
.Though, this leaves us with a question "Why would the moon cause this curse?" it seems quite weird for the moon to just randomly curse whoever falls in love.
The answer to that, is the fact that Black Cap and the moon are connected.
Like I had said previously, Black Cap is a reference to the moon who takes a human/hare form. Making me believe that they are somewhat connected in a way or another.
Not only that, but if we pay close attention to each song in the album, the only main characters that seem to ever get a truly bad ending is either the Wolf or Red Cap. Black Cap seems to always escape somewhat unscathed, either because she was the one responsible for the bad ending or because she had absolutely nothing to do with the story at hand.
Its quite strange how Black Cap never dies in any of the songs, not only that, but she always seems to get a somewhat happy ending. In most of the songs, the main obstacle that keeps Black Cap from being together with the Wolf (Red Cap) seems to die. Leaving no one stopping her from getting the Wolf. Even in the only song where the Wolf dies, it was caused by Black Cap. She killed the Wolf because she chose her own sister on top of her beloved one, probably killing him because her jealousy was ruining the friendship between her and Red Cap (contrasting the events that happened in «Child's Play» where she chooses the Wolf over Red Cap).
With that in mind, the secret of the forest is that the moon is in Black Cap's side, having the power to create a curse in order for Black Cap to always have a good ending no matter what. I guess in a way, you could say that the moon is always protecting her. Or I guess, you could also say that Black Cap is responsible for all of this.
Ah, and to answer the Wolf's question, the next color that the forest will be dyed in is white. Since, the forest changes colors not only during the night time but also when seasons change, so for it to be red it must mean its currently Autumn. Meaning that it will be dyed white when the next season (Winter) comes by. Its quite interesting in a way, that the next color the forest is going to be dyed in is the same color of the moon. Perhaps its hinting at us that the moon was responsible for all of this all along or perhaps it just means that with Red Cap gone, its finally time for Black Cap to shine and live her happy ending with Mr Wolf.
And with that, we are finally done covering the story!
Took me quite a while to write down all of this but I believe that I covered everything. It was quite hard to understand a few of the songs but even with the difficulties it was overall pretty fun!! I hope that you all enjoyed it as much as I did!

It's full of incorrect english and had quite a lot of things wrong in its theories, that upon further inspection, I ended up fixing in my article, but I still really appreciate it for making me interested in the Gothika series. If you wish you are free to check the blog out, even though I already covered the Gothika series and pretty much covered what they covered, they made more theories in other albums of Yura. Gothika Full Album (Wrong Spanish Translation) (
WARNING: This playlist is filled with WRONG spanish translations made by Alioli723, xMechiiStar and Mirtha magaña silva [this last one made their "translation" in the comments of the last song in that playlist]. For as mean as it is for me to point this out, I believe that its fair for me warn the community of the wrong translations that I've stumbled upon and almost believed (and that I saw most of the community believe) that were true due to the lack of translations that there were out there. You are still free to check the playlist out but please take into mind that
their translations spread misinformation that's not cannon to the story. Many of them even did admit that
their translations were influenced by what THEY thought was the actual story of what was going on (which were just theories without any evidence backing them). So take into mind before diving in that the only correct translation in that playlist is made GhoulTamer of the song «Pan's Labyrinth».
With that warning out of the way, we are truly done!
I hope you enjoyed this story and album as much as I did and that I did a good job at covering this amazing series!
I also hope you all have an amazing day/night!
